Our mixture of carrier oils is the main ingredient in every bottle and all provide powerful benefits for both your beard and your skin. They tend to be relatively odourless which is why we also add essential oils to the mixture to give your beard a nice smelling fragrance.
They have been used since the time of ancient Greece and Rome when aromatic oils were used in massages, baths, cosmetics, and yep, even beards, way back then!
After years of research and experimentation we’ve combined three special carrier oils that make up the base of every bottle of Hinterlands beard oil.
Most essential oils are very highly concentrated and should not be used directly on your skin. By mixing them with a quality carrier oils you can achieve the right balance and unlock their own unique and beneficial properties for you and your beard.
These oils are a key ingredient in our beard oil and provide long lasting aromas, making sure your beard smells fresher for longer.

After years of research, experimentation and sourcing the best suppliers, we finally found the perfect mixture of three specific carrier oils to keep our beards soft, healthy and itch free.
These oils are blended with just the right percentages to take full advantage of their properties and varying viscosity.
These oils are Castor, Sweet Almond and Apricot Kernel. They make up the base of every bottle of Hinterlands Beard Oil.
It has been used as a beard oil since ancient times. In fact, the Greeks actually favoured Castor oil on their beards even though Olive oil was one of the primary products of ancient Greece and much more readily available.
The oil is pressed from the castor seed and has proven benefits for hair health and growth, as well as antibacterial and anti-fungal properties.
It is the thickest of the carrier oils I use and combines perfectly with the other two other thinner carrier oils, as it aids in their application process - helping them soak in and stay on the beard.
Ancient Chinese and Ayurvedic practices have used sweet almond oil for centuries to help soothe and soften skin, as well as to treat minor wounds and cuts. Today, sweet almond oil is commonly found in a wide range of cosmetic and beauty products.
Sweet almond oil is an excellent choice of carrier oil in beard oils, widely known and regarded for its exceptional benefits to your skin.
The oil is produced by pressing sweet almonds, which are up to 44% pure oil by weight. Sweet almond oil softens and conditions your beard hair, but is much more geared towards aiding the health of the skin beneath the beard. This makes sweet almond oil our clear choice to use in our beard oil, to prevent and cure any struggle with dry or itchy skin.
🥜 Please let us know if you are allergic to tree nuts. We’d be more than happy to make a custom mixture of any of our recipes with a fitting substitute for Sweet Almond Oil.
This oil closely resembles the natural sebum produced in human skin. When applied to itchy, chapped, wounded, or sore skin, Apricot Kernel Oil facilitates faster healing without leaving a greasy residue.
Apricot oil contains Omega 9 which has many benefits for your body and, where your beard is concerned, also helps stimulate the growth of thicker, longer, and stronger hair.
It spreads well and is readily absorbed into the skin, leaving a smooth and silky feel. Being a ‘light’ oil makes it excellent choice for your beard.
This is definitely the most fun and creative part about creating beard oil.
A perfect blend of different essential oils offers a range of scents that can awaken memories of specific areas of nature to either calm your mind or wake you up.
Below we’ve outlined the essential oils used in the different recipes of Hinterlands Beard Oil.
Bergamot:
This oil comes from smashing the peel of the Bergamot fruit. Bergamot has sweet and wonderful scent, and is a widely used top note in a lot of perfumes. As a bonus Bergamot also has some great properties for beard oils, including being antibacterial and antiseptic.
Patchouli:
It has a distinct spicy and musky smell. Aside from the astringent and antiseptic properties, patchouli is also used as an aphrodisiac in many cultures.
Sandalwood:
Sandalwood retains its fragrance for decades and was therefore once widely used to embalm the dead. Sandalwood is especially great for the skin and has a host of benefits like soothing acne and helping with an itchy beard. It also smells divine!
Petitgrain:
Perhaps one of the greatest benefits of Petitgrain oil is its soothing and relaxing properties. The oil is good for maintaining the moisture and oil balance of the skin as well as for treating acne, dryness, cracked skin and more. Derived from the bitter orange tree, Petitgrain Oil possesses an aroma that is sweet, with subtle floral and woody characteristics.
Grapefruit:
Grapefruit essential oil is created from the rind of this fruit and has many benefits. The aroma of the oil matches the citrus and fruity flavours of its origin and provides an invigorating and energising aroma, perfect for early risers! The Grapefruit is believed by botanists to be a happy accident, originating from the combination of the pomelo (citrus grandis) and the Sweet Orange (citrus sinesis).
Pine Needle:
This oil has an earthy, outdoorsy fragrance that is reminiscent of a thick forest. This essential oil invokes memories of nature and offers many benefits to your skin while also preventing itchiness.
Cedarwood:
This oil contains the greatest concentration of Sesquiterpenes of any essential oil, which helps release toxins from the body and increase circulation. Cedarwood also has antiseptic, antibacterial, astringent, and anti fungal properties – as well as working as a natural insect repellent. On top of all this, Cedarwood has a wonderful woody smell.
Juniper Berry:
This oil contains powerful topical cleansing benefits that will help to cleanse the skin. Detoxifying and full of antioxidants the oil works to repair and strengthen the epidermis, allowing it to defend itself from impurities that can damage the skin and cause premature ageing. It has a sweet, fresh and woody smell.
